Excelling in the Classroom and Beyond
By bringing the nation's most promising African American students to Grounds, the Holland Scholarship fund enhances University life for all students. Holland Scholars lead the way in academics, in University life, and in extracurricular activities. They have won some of the University's highest awards, and have served as leaders in its most respected posts. With their achievements and in their daily interactions with their peers, they make a lasting impact on the University.
Recognition and Awards
Holland participants have been recognized for their leadership and academic excellence as Scholars in the College of Arts and Sciences and as Rodman Scholars in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Nationally, they have been among the recipients of Ron Brown Scholarships, given to young African Americans of outstanding promise; they have studied in Asia as Henry Luce Scholars; and they have won Howard Hughes Biomedical Scholarships for their scientific prowess.
For their character, leadership, and service, Holland Scholars have received such honors as the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award; the Gray-Carrington Scholarship Award; and the Seven Society Leadership Award. They have earned Harrison Awards, allowing them to pursue independent research projects. They have been selected for the Raven Society and for Phi Beta Kappa, and chosen to live on the Lawn in the historic rooms designed by Thomas Jefferson-one of the University's highest honors.
