About Read to Lead
The Ron Brown Scholar Read to Lead Program addresses the importance of literacy and leadership and teaches practical ways to help students reach many of life's goals. The Read to Lead Program pairs the book I Have Risen: Essays by African American Youth - a collection of compelling, positive stories of achievement in the face of numerous obstacles written by 17- and 18-year-olds applying for Ron Brown scholarships - with a powerful set of teaching points for classroom use. The goal of the Read to Lead Program is to teach that Leaders Graduate ▪ Leaders Overcome ▪ Leaders Achieve ▪ Leaders Lead ▪ Leaders Serve.
About the Community Access Fund
To date, The Paramount Theater of Charlottesville’s Community Access Fund has underwritten up to 70% of the rental costs of 26 area nonprofit organizations performing on The Paramount’s stage, including the Jefferson Youth Theater, featuring performers from The Boys & Girls Club of Charlottesville/Albemarle, The Oratorio Society of Charlottesville-Albemarle, the Charlottesville High School Orchestra, the Virginia Festival of the Book, Black Voices Gospel Choir, the 2nd annual Festival of the Photograph, and a CD-release performance of songs composed by local students through the Kid Pan Alley program. The Community Access Fund also provides tickets to students and citizens who cannot otherwise afford to attend a performance at The Paramount. During the past year, The Paramount provided 250 complimentary tickets for certain performances to local educators; Boys and Girls Club members; Music Resource Center students; area orchestra students; economically-disadvantaged preschool students; and local dance students.
