The Jerome Holland Scholarship

The Jerome Holland Scholarship was created in 1987 to help the University of Virginia (UVA) compete for the most promising African American students in the country. Named for the late Ambassador to Sweden, the CAP Charitable Foundation sponsored scholarship is a reflection of his commitment to academic excellence and public service.

The scholarship is awarded based upon a demonstrated, genuine interest in learning, strong academic achievement, success in extracurricular activities and leadership. There is no financial need restriction nor separate application: all black or African-American students applying to UVA are considered for the four to seven Holland Scholarships available each year. Each scholarship is renewable for four years and currently pays $20,000 for out-of-state students and $10,000 for Virginians, annually.

During the month of March, the Holland Scholarship selection committee chooses several finalists based on their academic record, leadership capabilities,

and overall potential. Finalists are screened during an annual selection weekend at UVA that includes a seminar and personal interviews with UVA faculty and administrators. In addition, the finalists have an opportunity to experience student life on campus and are paired with current Holland students. Notifications are sent within weeks following the annual selection weekend.
