Angela graduated as valedictorian of her class at Cass Technical High School. She played flute in the school band and participated in several science clubs. During two internships, Angela explored her interest in medicine. At Karmanos Cancer Institute at Harper Hospital in Detroit, she helped to research and develop new drugs to treat hard tumors. The following year she participated in a program through NASA at Hampton University on the effects of lead toxicity on child development.
Angela maintained a 4.0 GPA while at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans where she majored in chemistry and graduated in 2001. She served as Vice President of her freshman class and is a member of the Political Action Committee of the NAACP. "I’ve really enjoyed becoming more involved in the elections and informing my classmates about candidates and their positions on issues," she reported. During the summer after her first year at Xavier Angela worked as a pharmacy technician and for the U.S. Small Business Administration, where she was involved in the welfare-to-work initiative. She also volunteered in ambulatory surgery and in the operating room at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. The next summer she participated in the University of Pennsylvania’s Pre-Med Enrichment Program for Minority Undergraduates, and the next year she conducted research at Case Western Reserve University.
