Joel Bervell is a graduate of Yale University ('17) where he studied Molecular Cellular Developmental Biology. While growing up in the rainy city of Seattle, Joel developed a love for volunteering, leadership and health care.
At Yale, Joel served as Task Force Director on the Executive Committee of Yale College Council, Vice President of the Yale Leadership Institute, and co-director of an after school mentoring program called the Jones Zimmermann Academic Mentoring Program. Over his summers, Joel had the opportunity to intern at the Urban Institute in their health policy department, Howard University Hospital in orthopedic surgery, and to travel to Shanghai, China with ASDAN China as a director for the World Youth Economic Forum.
The project that has most arrested his attention is Hugs for Ghana, an entirely student-led non-profit organization that he and his sister founded in 2007 dedicated to giving gifts of hope and love to children in Ghana, West Africa. Today, Hugs has nearly 150 youth volunteers, multiple branches around the United States, and has successfully raised over $250,000 worth of material and monetary donations including sports equipment, school supplies and medical supplies.
He currently is pursuing a Masters Degree in Medical Science at Boston University and plans on entering into medical school to become an MD/MBA dual degree candidate.Back to www.ronbrown.org
