Michele Ballantyne


Michele Ballantyne is Senior Vice President, Federal Government and Industry Relations, at the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Michele joined the RIAA team during the summer of 2004.

Prior to her work at the RIAA, Michele served as General Counsel for U.S. Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), advising the Senator on policy matters before the Senate. Working with her colleagues in all Democratic offices, her responsibilities included coordinating legislative strategy and managing caucus initiatives for Senate Democrats. Prior to her work on Capitol Hill, Ballantyne was Special Assistant to the President and Special Counselor to White House Chief of Staff John Podesta from 1999 - 2001, overseeing all aspects of the operations of that office.

In addition to her federal government experience, Ballantyne also worked as an associate in the Intellectual Property Practice Group at the law firm Collier, Shannon, Scott, PLLC. From 1992 - 1996, she worked as an associate at Podesta Associates, representing a variety of nonprofit and corporate clients on judiciary, environmental, trade, technology and other domestic policy issues.

Ballantyne earned a B.A. from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, a Masters Degree from George Washington University and her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
